Christiaan Huygens (pronounced "hoy-gans") and his brother Constantine Huygens, created their own telescopes during the 17th century in the Netherlands. Galileo Galiliei could not figure out what was poking out of the sides of Saturn. It was Huygens who discovered in 1656, at the age of 27, that Saturn is surrounded by a ring.
