The Evolution of Primitive and Sophisticated Neural Networks

neural-network

The human brain has 100,000,000,000,000 (100 trillion) connections and 86,000,000,000 (86 billion) neurons, which is more connections and neurons than there are stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Ironically, the majority of the most successful creatures on Earth do not have a brain; organisms like plants, coral, and jellyfish. The sea squirt is a primary example as it has just 200 neurons, allowing it only to perceive and display simple interaction with the environment by sensing light and moving its flagellum. The sea squirt moves around until it finds a rock, then it dumps its tail and uses those once dedicated neurons for different applications, staying anchored to this spot for the rest of its life. Neurons were originally designed to allow for simple motion and movement, but as evolution progressed steadily, neural networks began to build and design intelligent life which is capable of consciousness and a sense of self but also more abstract concepts like art, mathematics, and science

South Korean Culture and the Importance of Facial Symmetry and Beauty

South-Korean-gwansang

Facial structure is incredibly important in South Korea and professionals are available who specialize physiognomy, the practice of reading facial features the same way palm readers read the lines of the palm to determine ones supposed fortune (e.g. the forehead supposedly represents luck, up to the age of 30, as well as a person’s parents luck and the nose represents oneself in their entirety and can also be indicative of wealth). The facial reading process is a pseudoscience similar to phrenology of the 19th century. The practice of facial queue reading is actually quite commonplace with top employers like Samsung, LG, and Kia using facial reading experts to help decide who the company should hire for various positions. The body is also accounted for in this reading, but on a much smaller scale. Facial readers claim to be able to predict and decode a persons fortune, career, and wealth, not only for the person being examined, but also of their parents. This process is referred to in Korean as “gwansang”

The Purpose and Setup of Sensory Deprivation Tanks

sensory-deprevation-tankSensory deprivation involves a large tank which is filled up with water heated to 37 degrees Celsius, the same temperature as the body, and 1000 lbs., or some variation of this in smaller tanks, of Epsom salts are added, so that half of the body is underwater and half of it is above because of the density of the salt within the water. Human beings have low fat content on average and need this salt otherwise a participant would sink. An observer cannot distinguish between water and air because when within the tank as it feels the same, and after a short period of time, because there are no visual queues being that the tank is completely dark, in the absence of sensory input, an observer typically begins to think differently as the brain has more resources dedicated to thought as less surface area is compartmentalized for sensory stimuli. This process is extremely similar to meditation, however meditation takes both time and practice to achieve upon a consistent, reliable, and meaningful level, as opposed to a sensory deprivation tank in which reaching such a state is essentially automatic provided enough time passes within the tank for the observer. This experience ends instantaneously once the tanks door is opened however, unlike meditation or the use of pharmacological agents to achieve a psychedelic or intrinsic experience

Scientific Explanation of the Abortion Procedure

egg-and-sperm.png

Abortions can be carried out in 2 ways, either surgically or pharmacologically by taking medication. Pharmacologically speaking, the secondary option is indicative of an induced miscarriage. Women can choose this option until 10 weeks into their pregnancy. The medication Mifepristone RU486 (pronounced “miff-eh-priss-stone”) was approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 2000, and allows women to undergo the abortion procedure within the privacy of their own home. Mifepristone is taken first which causes the process of an abortion to start by halting the growth process and detaching the infant from the womb. 24 hours later, Misoprostol (pronounced “miso-prah-stull”) helps to induce the cramping and bleeding which will help the body push the developing fetus out of the uterus. Most physicians offer intravenous sedation to help comfort those who undergo an uncomfortable and sometimes painful procedure with social stigma attached. Most patients prefer surgical abortion as it allows them to psychologically leave the abortion behind them, in the clinic. The procedure itself is incredibly safe and requires that a woman be placed into stirrups after which a physician performs a bimanual examination to feel the positioning of the uterus, a speculum is placed into position and the cervix is cleaned, a small clip is placed upon the top of the cervix so that the uterine canal is straight, after which the cervix is then dilated and the pregnancy is removed via suction. The entire process takes 2 – 5 minutes and complications are incredibly rare. One of the most important components of safety in terms of procedure is to ensure that all pregnancy tissue has been removed from the uterus. Physicians take any tissue removed, usually to a specialized room within the clinic, so that it can be rinsed off and examined in a dish with a backlight which allows for confirmation of all the tissue which should be present in respect to the length of gestation prior to the abortion procedure. This helps physicians monitor for possible complications which may arise in the future. Prior to 10 weeks, a fetus is a small sack of tissue with nothing recognizable as human, but after the 10 week mark, various bits of tissue become recognizable as human parts

Whilst I rarely if ever will submit an opinion upon this blog, I feel that it is necessary to state that it is imperative that we remember, women are not simply vessels for the carrying of multiple pregnancies, rather they are human beings who deserve the right to have control over their own lives, and it is crucial that world law uphold this basic human right, despite the anti-abortion collective which appears unmoved by rational arguments brought forth by qualified healthcare professionals, those who have spent their entire academic and professional careers training to specialize in the highly complicated and ever changing field of medicine and healthcare

The Danger of Air Pollution Gaining Access to the Brain

air-pollution

The reason pollution has a metallic taste and scent and that it burns the eyes when exposed to it is because the particles of air pollution are tiny enough that they can travel through nerve cells, and gain direct entry to the brain, where the olfactory bulbar meets the frontal cortex, as there is no blood-brain barrier at this point. The body protects itself through the blood-brain barrier, which means that particles within the bloodstream, cannot get directly into the brain. This system has a slight flaw however as the nose acts as a direct conduit for incredibly tiny particles to bypass this security mechanism

Prince Charles’ Environmentally Friendly Vehicles

Prince-Phillip-Aston-Martin-Volante

Prince Charles owns an Aston Martin Volante which has been retrofitted to run upon surplus British white wine and whey. Charles received the vehicle when he was 21 and requested that engineers find a more sustainable fuel source for its engine because of his initiative to address climate change and the issues facing humanity before the 21st century. The engineers who worked upon the project felt that the task was insurmountable during the beginning of their research however after having successfully built such an engine, it is now accepted that the retrofitted engine actually runs better with more power upon white wine and whey than it does upon petrol, and as an added bonus feature, Charles has proclaimed that he thoroughly enjoys the delicious scent of the vehicle as it runs. Charles also had his royal train retrofitted to run upon cooking oil, another task which was successfully completed so that Charles can use the train half a dozen times per year

How Phosphorescence Works

phosphorescence

Glow in the dark products work because of a chemical additive which allows the product to absorb energy on one frequency, and reemit it as visible light which is a different frequency. Zinc sulphide and strontium aluminate are the most commonly used phosphors for photoluminescent products as they reemit energy over a considerably long period. When light is shone upon a glow in the dark object, incoming photons excite the phosphor molecules and these molecules then release that energy taken in by releasing photons and creating a dim light glow. Different phosphors release energy at different rates and thus, the slower a phosphor releases energy, the longer it will glow. The human eye is most sensitive to green light in the dark which is why night vision technology was traditionally created with a green tint

The Scientific Study of Consciousness After Decapitation In Rodents

laboratory-rat

Brainwave activity in laboratory rats has been measured after decapitation. Scientists have determined that the brain stays conscious for 4 seconds after decapitation. Laboratory rat brain cells could theoretically start working again if intervention is quick enough supplying the brain with adequate oxygen and glucose

Possible Future Technologies Which May Be Used In a Judicial Capacity

brain-electroencephalogram

Subjects who display increased alpha wave activity, specifically within the temporal region of the brain when being scanned with electroencephalograph imaging is typically indicative of a person recalling a memory. Subjects who display increased alpha wave activity within the frontal region of the brain when being scanned with that same imaging technology is indicative of a person fabricating or conceptualizing a story. These types of scans may be used in the future within the criminal justice system when determining whether or not a person is telling the truth or fabricating an alternate summary of events
