The Legality of Retail Stores Demanding to See a Purchase Receipt

It is illegal for a private company (e.g. Walmart etc.) to demand to see a customers receipt at the point of leaving the premises (e.g. Walmart greeter demanding to see customer receipt as they leave the store) however the private corporation does have the legal authority to detain a customer due to “shopkeeper’s/merchant’s privilege” as long as reasonable suspicion has been met (e.g. customer refusing to show a receipt while leaving with product in hand etc.). Reasonable suspicion deems that the retailer must have a reasonable belief, based upon specific facts, evidence, and circumstances, that the customer has committed theft. For this reason, randomly selecting customers (e.g. customer with no product in hand leaving the store etc.) to show a receipt without any suspicion is problematic. Membership retail establishments (e.g. Costco or Sam’s Club etc.) can demand to see proof of membership as well as proof of receipt because when members sign up they agree to specific terms and conditions. Refusal to comply with store policy may result in consequences, up to and including being denied future entry and/or membership termination

The Italian Concept of Caffè Sospeso

In Italy, cafes often allow customers to purchase a suspended coffee, which is a drink paid for and donated to be consumed by a future customer at no cost, referred to as a “caffè sospeso” which means “suspended coffee” in Italian. This act of charity and humanitarianism does not allow the purchaser to know who consumes their donation, and does not allow the receiver to know who provided it, as the barista decides who should receive said gift. This act of kindness started in the 1930’s when poverty was rampant in Europe, as it was believed that a coffee provided at no charge revitalized an individual and made their entire day better, more so because of the act itself, rather than the coffee or money involved

Bisphenol A, Health, and Hormone Disruption

Bisphenol A is a compound used to manufacture many types of plastic, including bottles, the lining of canned food, household electronics etc. which are known to contain endocrine disrupting properties which can cause hormones to misfire and cause a myriad of diseases processes including diabetes, brain disorders, and cancers. It is suspected that Bisphenol A is the primary cause of early onset puberty in adolescents. Bisphenol A was initially designed to be a hormonal therapy for women, specifically as birth control as it has estrogen analogs, being that it is classified as a “xenoestrogen”. Because it was not quite powerful enough to be used in medicine, it was shelved until scientists figured out that Bisphenol A could make plastics more firm. 93% of Americans test positive for Bisphenol A within their bodies. Bisphenol A is found in thermal paper, which is used to create receipts for customers after the point of purchase. It is been scientifically studied and verified that Bisphenol A is absorbed rapidly by the skin in massive quantities after touching thermal paper, and that it does absorb into the various organ systems of the body
